How to Remove a Schlage Interior Door Knob

Replacing or repairing an interior door knob can be a relatively simple task with the right tools and a little know-how. If you're dealing with a Schlage interior door knob, here's a step-by-step guide to help you remove it safely and efficiently:

Step 1: Gather Your Tools

Before you begin, make sure you have the following tools:

Phillips head screwdriver
Flathead screwdriver or butter knife
Small hammer (optional)

Step 2: Remove the Faceplate

Locate the faceplate on the knob, which is usually held in place by two small screws. Using the Phillips head screwdriver, unscrew these screws and carefully remove the faceplate.

Step 3: Expose the Locking Mechanism

Once the faceplate is removed, you'll see a small hole in the center of the knob. Insert the flathead screwdriver or butter knife into this hole and gently pry the locking mechanism outward. The knob should now be loose.

Step 4: Remove the Knob

Grip the knob firmly and pull it straight toward you. If the knob is stuck, you can gently tap it with a small hammer to loosen it.

Step 5: Remove the Latch

On the side of the door opposite the knob, you'll find the latch assembly. Use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws holding the latch in place. Once the screws are removed, pull the latch out of the door.

The latch assembly is connected to the knob by a metal rod. To disconnect them, use the flathead screwdriver or butter knife to pry the rod out of the knob.

Step 7: Remove the Knob Spindle

Locate the knob spindle, which is the long, thin metal rod that runs through the center of the knob. Use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws holding the spindle in place. Once the screws are removed, pull the spindle out of the door.

Step 8: Remove the Interior Plate

On the inside of the door, you'll find the interior plate, which is usually held in place by two screws. Use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove these screws and carefully remove the interior plate.

Step 9: Clean and Inspect

Once the knob is removed, take a few moments to clean the door, knob, and latch assembly. Inspect all components for any damage or wear and tear, and replace them as necessary.

Step 10: Reassemble the Knob

To reassemble the knob, simply follow the steps in reverse order. Make sure to tighten all screws securely.
