How to Replace an Interior Door Handle

Replacing an interior door handle is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few minutes with a few basic tools. Here are the steps on how to do it:

Materials You'll Need

Replacement door handle
Screwdriver
Optional: Measuring tape or ruler

Step 1: Remove the Old Handle

Start by removing the screws that hold the old door handle in place. These screws are usually located on the inside of the door, near the edge of the handle. Once the screws are removed, you can pull the old handle straight off of the door.

Step 2: Measure and Mark the New Handle's Position

Next, measure and mark the position of the new door handle. The new handle should be installed in the same location as the old handle. To do this, use a measuring tape or ruler to measure the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the old handle. Then, mark this measurement on the inside of the door, using a pencil or a piece of tape.

Step 3: Install the New Handle

Once you have marked the position of the new handle, you can install it. To do this, simply line up the new handle with the marks that you made on the door. Then, insert the screws into the holes on the inside of the door and tighten them until the handle is secure.

Step 4: Test the New Handle

Once the new handle is installed, test it to make sure that it is working properly. Open and close the door a few times to make sure that the handle is securely attached and that it is easy to open and close the door.

Tips

If you are not sure what size door handle to buy, you can take the old handle with you to the hardware store and compare it to the new ones.
If you are having trouble removing the old door handle, you can try using a penetrating oil to loosen the screws.
