How to Frame an Interior Door Opening

Step 1: Determine the Opening Size

Measure the height and width of the door you plan to install. Add 2 inches to both measurements to account for the door stop and latch. This will give you the rough opening size.

Step 2: Install the Header

Cut the header to the width of the opening and install it above the rough opening. Use a level to ensure it's straight and level. Secure the header with nails or screws.

Step 3: Install the Jack Studs

Cut two jack studs to the height of the header. Place them vertically on either side of the header, flush with the inside edge. Nail or screw them into the header.

Step 4: Install the Trimmers

Cut four trimmers to the height of the opening. Place two trimmers on the outside of each jack stud, flush with the edge of the opening. Nail or screw them into the jack studs.

Step 5: Install the King Studs

Cut two king studs to the height of the opening. Place them vertically inside the trimmers, flush with the inside edge of the opening. Nail or screw them into the header, jack studs, and trimmers.

Step 6: Insulate and Caulk

Fill the gaps between the king studs and the existing wall studs with insulation. Caulk any gaps around the header, jack studs, trimmers, and king studs to prevent drafts and noise.

Step 7: Install the Door

Once the framing is complete, you can install the door according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Use a square to ensure all cuts are square.
Double-check all measurements before cutting any lumber.
