How to Fix Scratched Car Interior Plastic

Scratched car interior plastic can be an eyesore, but it's not necessarily a permanent problem. With the right tools and techniques, you can repair scratched plastic and restore its original appearance.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Plastic polish
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Sandpaper (optional)
  • Heat gun or hair dryer (optional)

Steps:

1. Clean the Surface: Before you start repairing the scratches, clean the plastic surface thoroughly with a microfiber cloth and a mild cleaning solution. Remove any dirt or debris that could interfere with the repair process.

2. Sand the Scratches (Optional): For deep scratches, you may need to sand them lightly using fine-grit sandpaper (600-800 grit). Sand the scratches in the direction of their length, being careful not to remove too much material.

3. Apply Plastic Polish: Apply a small amount of plastic polish to a microfiber cloth and rub it into the scratches in a circular motion. Use light pressure and work your way from the edges of the scratch towards the center.

4. Buff the Surface: Once the plastic polish has been applied, buff the surface using a clean microfiber cloth. Use firm circular motions to remove any excess polish and create a smooth finish.

5. Heat Treatment (Optional): For deeper scratches, you can use a heat gun or hair dryer to soften the plastic and help the scratches blend in. Hold the heat source at a distance and move it around in a circular motion until the plastic becomes pliable. Be careful not to overheat the plastic.

6. Repeat Steps 3-5: Repeat steps 3-5 as necessary until the scratches are filled in and the surface is smooth. You may need to apply multiple layers of plastic polish and buff the surface after each layer.

7. Protect the Plastic: Once the scratches have been repaired, protect the plastic by applying a vinyl protectant or wax. This will help prevent future scratches and keep the plastic looking its best.

Tips:

  • Test the plastic polish in an inconspicuous area first to make sure it doesn't damage the plastic.
  • Use a light touch when sanding or polishing to avoid damaging the plastic.
  • If the scratches are too deep to repair with plastic polish, you may need to replace the plastic component.
