How to Build an Interior Door Frame from Scratch

Building an interior door frame from scratch is a relatively simple and straightforward project, even for beginners. With the right tools and materials, you can create a custom door frame that perfectly fits your doorway and enhances the overall aesthetic of your home.

Materials:

  • 1x4 pine boards for the jambs and header
  • 1/2-inch plywood for the filler
  • Wood glue
  • 1 5/8-inch finish nails
  • Wood filler
  • Sandpaper
  • Circular saw or miter saw
  • Nail gun or hammer
  • Clamps
  • Level

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Jambs and Header:

Cut two 1x4 pine boards to the height of the doorway minus 1 1/2 inches. These boards will form the jambs. Cut a third 1x4 board to the width of the doorway minus 1 1/2 inches. This board will form the header.

2. Assemble the Jambs:

Apply wood glue to the edges of one of the jambs and the bottom of the header. Clamp the jamb and header together, making sure they are square. Repeat the process for the other jamb.

3. Install the Filler:

Cut two pieces of 1/2-inch plywood to the same dimensions as the jambs. Insert these pieces into the jambs, making sure they are flush with the top and bottom of the frame.

4. Install the Frame in the Doorway:

Position the frame in the doorway, making sure it is level and square. Drive finish nails through the jambs into the framing of the doorway.

5. Install the Trim:

Measure and cut 1x4 trim boards to fit around the frame. Apply wood glue to the edges of the trim boards and attach them to the frame.

6. Fill and Sand:

Fill any nail holes or gaps with wood filler and allow it to dry. Sand the frame smooth with sandpaper.

7. Stain or Paint:

If desired, stain or paint the frame to match the décor of the room.

Tips:

  • When cutting the jambs, make sure they are slightly shorter than the height of the doorway. This will allow for clearance for the door.
  • Use a level to make sure the frame is square and level before installing it in the doorway.
  • If the doorway is not perfectly square, you may need to trim the frame slightly to fit.

Conclusion:

Building an interior door frame from scratch is an easy and rewarding project that can provide both functionality and aesthetic value to your home. By following these steps, you can create a custom door frame that perfectly complements the style of your room and provides a durable and attractive entryway for years to come.
