How To Install Interior Trim Around Sliding Glass Door

Installing interior trim around a sliding glass door can enhance the aesthetics and functionality of your room. Here's a detailed guide to help you achieve professional-looking results:

Tools and Materials:

  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Miter saw
  • Nail gun
  • 18-gauge brad nails
  • Caulk gun
  • Caulk
  • Scribe
  • Sandpaper
  • Wood filler (optional)
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Measuring and Cutting the Trim:

1. Measure the width of the door frame and the height from the top of the door to the floor. Subtract 1/8 inch from both measurements to allow for expansion.

2. Cut two vertical pieces of trim to the measured height and two horizontal pieces of trim to the measured width.

3. Use a miter saw to cut 45-degree angles on the ends of each piece to create mitered corners.

Installing the Vertical Trim:

1. Place the vertical trim pieces against the door frame, ensuring the inside edges are flush with the edge of the frame.

2. Level the trim pieces and secure them with brad nails approximately every 12 inches.

3. Repeat for the other vertical trim piece on the opposite side of the door.

Installing the Horizontal Trim:

1. Use a scribe to mark the contour of the bottom of the sliding glass door on the horizontal trim pieces.

2. Cut along the marked lines to create a notch that will fit around the door.

3. Place the horizontal trim pieces on top of the vertical trims, with the notched section facing the door.

4. Level the trim pieces and secure them with brad nails.

Finishing Touches:

1. Fill any nail holes or gaps with wood filler and allow it to dry.

2. Sand the filled areas smooth.

3. Apply caulk to the joints between the trim and the wall or door frame.

4. Paint or stain the trim as desired to match the existing decor.

By following these steps, you can successfully install interior trim around a sliding glass door, adding a polished and professional touch to your room.
