How to Add Trim to Interior Windows

Adding trim to interior windows is a great way to enhance their appearance and give your home a more polished look. It's a relatively simple project that can be completed in a few hours with just a few basic tools. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to add trim to interior windows:

Materials Needed:

  • Window trim molding
  • Miter saw
  • Caulk gun
  • Caulk
  • Finishing nails
  • Nail gun (optional)
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Trim

Measure the width and height of the window opening. Add 2 inches to the width and height to determine the length of the trim pieces you need. Cut the trim pieces to the correct length using a miter saw.

Step 2: Attach the Bottom Trim

Place the bottom trim piece along the bottom edge of the window opening. Center the trim and secure it with finishing nails or a nail gun. Make sure the trim is level.

Step 3: Attach the Side Trim

Place the side trim pieces on each side of the window opening. Align the trim pieces with the bottom trim and secure them with finishing nails or a nail gun. Make sure the trim is level.

Step 4: Install the Top Trim

Place the top trim piece along the top edge of the window opening. Align the trim piece with the side trim pieces and secure it with finishing nails or a nail gun. Make sure the trim is level.

Step 5: Miter the Corners

Use a miter saw to cut 45-degree angles on the ends of the trim pieces that meet at the corners. This will create a seamless joint.

Step 6: Attach the Mitered Corners

Apply a small amount of caulk to the mitered corners. Place the corners in place and secure them with finishing nails or a nail gun.

Step 7: Caulk the Trim

Apply a bead of caulk around the edges of the trim where it meets the window frame and the wall. Smooth the caulk with your finger or a caulk tool.

Step 8: Finishing Touches

Once the caulk is dry, you can paint or stain the trim to match the existing trim in your home. You can also add decorative elements, such as molding or rosettes, to enhance the look of the trim.

Tips:

  • Use a sharp blade on your miter saw to ensure clean cuts.
  • Measure twice and cut once to avoid mistakes.
  • Use a level to make sure the trim is installed straight.
  • Don't over-caulk the trim. A small bead is all that is needed.
  • Allow the caulk to dry completely before painting or staining the trim.
